A file extension is the suffix at the end of a file name that indicates what type of file it is. It helps the operating system to determine which computer program the file is associated with. Most file extensions are three characters long but they can be anywhere from one to five characters long. File extension FAX is an image generated using fax software. These files are generic group 3 1bit encoded data files and are most often saved in .TIFF or .TIF format, which can be viewed using most image viewing programs.

The vertical and horizontal resolutions of a fax document are allowed to vary amongst a set of fixed resolutions as per the T.4 standard. Group 3 faxes use the T.30 protocol to manage fax sessions and consult on the capabilities that each fax in the connection supports. The T.4 protocol, on the other hand controls page resolution, size, transmission time and coding schemes.
